Ghana’s Minority in Parliament has warned that the country could face a cholera epidemic before the new administration takes office unless the government takes urgent action.

As of December 17, 2024, 123 cases and 15 deaths had been reported in the Western Region, with 15 health workers among those infected while treating patients. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ranking Member on the Health Committee, criticized the government for what he called gross negligence, linking the inaction to the same factors that contributed to the NPP’s electoral defeat.

“Without immediate and decisive interventions, Ghana risks facing a full-blown cholera epidemic before the incoming administration takes over,” Akandoh warned. He expressed concern that a situation which could have been contained weeks ago is instead worsening due to systemic neglect and inefficiency in the healthcare system.

Akandoh urged the government to allocate necessary resources and provide support to health workers in order to prevent further escalation of the outbreak.
