A five-member committee appointed by President John Mahama has begun hearings into petitions seeking the removal of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was set up under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution following the establishment of a prima facie case. The move came after President Mahama consulted the Council of State.

The panel is expected to sit three times a week as it investigates the allegations. Its final report, containing findings and recommendations, will be submitted to the President.

Justice Torkornoo was suspended after five separate petitions accused her of misconduct. President Mahama responded by forming the committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into three of those petitions.
