The Koforidua High Court in Ghana’s Eastern Region has granted an interim injunction preventing Ernest Kumi from being sworn in as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency.

Kumi, who was declared the winner of the seat by the Electoral Commission (EC) three weeks ago, has been at the center of a dispute between the two main political parties in the area, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over the collation of election results.

NDC parliamentary candidate Henry Boakye-Yiadom filed a lawsuit against Kumi, the EC, and the Clerk to Parliament, seeking to block Kumi’s swearing-in.

After hearing the case, the court issued a ruling barring Kumi from being recognized as the MP-elect. The court’s order states that the respondents, including their agents and representatives, are prohibited from swearing in, admitting, or gazetting Kumi as the elected MP for Akwatia.

Additionally, Kumi has been instructed not to present himself as the constituency’s MP. The injunction is set to remain in place for 10 days.
