A district court in Accra has dismissed key arguments in a high-profile extradition case involving Frederick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, clearing the way for proceedings to continue.
In its ruling, the Gbese District Court said there was no evidence to support claims by the defence that the case was politically motivated or that the accused had been entrapped into committing any offence.
The decision marks a significant development in the case, removing major legal obstacles that had been raised to challenge the extradition request.
Lawyers for Mr Kumi said the court concluded they had failed to demonstrate any political connection to the alleged offences. “The judge said we had not proven any political connection to the offence and that Abu needs to be extradited,” a member of the defence team said.
However, the court granted a 15-day window for the defence to contest the ruling, allowing time to file an appeal or seek a review.
The lawyer described the decision as “an error on the face of the record” and indicated that the legal team may escalate the matter to a higher court.
If the ruling is not overturned within the stipulated period, the case is expected to proceed to the next stage of the extradition process.
The case has attracted significant public interest due to alleged links to international fraud. Authorities in the requesting country are seeking Mr Kumi’s extradition to face charges related to online scams targeting victims abroad.
Mr Kumi has denied any wrongdoing. The outcome of a possible appeal is likely to determine whether he will be extradited to stand trial overseas.
