A High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition Patriotic Party (NPP), after he failed to appear for a scheduled court session on Tuesday without notifying the court.
The hearing, held on October 28, was slated for the filing of disclosures and case management in an ongoing criminal proceeding. Mr. Boasiako—commonly known as Chairman Wontumi—and his legal team were absent when the case was called at 9:40 a.m., prompting the court to take action.
The prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney Stella Ohene Appiah, was present. However, Justice Audrey Kocuvi-Tay, who presided over the session, noted that neither Mr. Boasiako nor his counsel had provided any explanation for their absence.
Mr. Boasiako is being tried alongside Kwame Antwi, a director of Akonta Mining Ltd., and the company itself. The defendants face charges of assigning mineral rights without lawful authority, a case that has drawn public attention amid growing scrutiny of Ghana’s mining sector and its political connections.
The warrant authorizes law enforcement to arrest Mr. Boasiako and bring him before the court to face the pending charges.
