A coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to cancel the Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) contract and the Agyapa Royalties deal, citing concerns over financial mismanagement and lack of benefits for Ghana.
The CSOs, which include the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), and IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, argue that the SML contract has diverted millions of Ghanaian cedis into private hands without delivering sufficient value to the country. They believe terminating the agreement would close a major revenue leak and restore public trust in the country’s financial management.
In a letter to Mahama, the coalition also called for the abolition of the Agyapa Royalties deal, which they say threatens Ghana’s mineral wealth and has faced public backlash. Additionally, they urged reforms in the energy sector, particularly in reducing political interference in state-owned enterprises like the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Ghana Gas, to enhance efficiency and leadership stability.
The CSOs emphasized their commitment to supporting Mahama’s administration in implementing reforms to improve transparency, accountability, and sector performance.
