King Charles III has shared a selection of his favorite music in a special playlist curated for Commonwealth Day, with a surprise inclusion of Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba’s ‘Mpempem Do Me’. The playlist, which was published on March 11 via Apple Music Radio’s The King’s Music Room, highlights the monarch’s musical tastes and celebrates the rich diversity of Commonwealth nations.
The playlist, curated to coincide with Commonwealth Day, features songs from various genres and cultures, reflecting Charles’ long-standing appreciation for music from across the globe. Notably, ‘Mpempem Do Me’ takes the seventh spot in the King’s playlist, with Charles expressing a personal connection to the song. “I found myself dancing along,” he said, recalling his visit to Ghana in 2018.
Other notable tracks in the playlist include Bob Marley’s Could You Be Loved, Nigerian artist Davido’s Kante featuring Fave, as well as contributions from British singer-songwriter Raye, and Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love featuring Jay-Z. Also featured is Grace Jones’ La Vie En Rose.
In a statement shared by Apple Music, King Charles explained that these songs bring him joy and represent a range of cultures and musical styles. He described them as reflecting the “love of life in all its richness and diversity,” which resonates with the shared values of the Commonwealth nations.
“I wanted to share with you the songs which have brought me joy,” he said. “They evoke many different styles and many different cultures. But all of them, like the family of Commonwealth nations, in their many different ways, share the same love of life in all its richness and diversity.”
King Charles also spoke fondly of Bob Marley’s music, praising the reggae legend for his “marvelous, infectious energy” and his “deep sincerity” and “profound concern for his community.” The King recalled Marley’s famous words, “The people have a voice inside of them,” which resonate with his enduring impact on global culture.
The playlist invites listeners to explore a variety of genres, from Afrobeats to reggae, pop, and disco, offering a musical journey that spans across the Commonwealth.
