The death toll in Ghana’s ongoing Bawku conflict has reached 19 after two more people were killed in an ambush near the town, as violence in the troubled region continues to escalate.
The victims, one a Mamprusi and the other a Togolese national, were travelling in a truck from Bawku when unknown gunmen opened fire, killing both on the spot. The Togolese man had reportedly been in Bawku to care for his ill father, who had recently passed away. The two men were returning to Togo with the deceased’s body when the attack occurred.
The Bawku conflict, stemming from deep-rooted chieftaincy and ethnic tensions, has left the area gripped by fear and unrest. Tensions recently flared again following the return of a rival chief, reigniting disputes between different ethnic groups.
Despite the government’s deployment of security forces to stabilise the area, violence continues to erupt, with clashes becoming more frequent and deadly in recent months.
