Joseph Osei-Owusu, Ghana’s First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has called for Alexander Afenyo-Markin to remain as the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in the upcoming Parliament.
Osei-Owusu, who will retire at the end of his current term, emphasised the importance of experience and longevity in parliamentary leadership. His remarks come as senior NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) engage in intense lobbying for the position ahead of the inauguration of the 9th Parliament next year.
“I strongly believe in longevity and experience,” Osei-Owusu said, citing the example of Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader, whose career progression from Chief Whip to Majority Leader had made him stand out. “Longevity brings experience and clarity,” he added, expressing his support for Afenyo-Markin to continue in the role.
Osei-Owusu also argued that, with Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu retiring, Afenyo-Markin is the most experienced candidate to lead the caucus. “There is no one within the NPP who has the necessary experience to lead as effectively as Afenyo-Markin,” he stated.
The Deputy Speaker pointed out the critical role of the caucus leader in the next Parliament, particularly as the NPP will enter with a reduced number of seats. Despite the party’s diminished influence in the House, Osei-Owusu underscored the need for a strong, assertive leader. “We need someone who is combative, who can ensure our voices are heard loud and clear,” he said.
Osei-Owusu’s comments highlight the internal debate within the NPP over its leadership for the next parliamentary term.
