Edward Doe Adjaho, the newly elected Chairman of Ghana’s Council of State, has promised that his leadership will bring a significant shift in the role of the advisory body to the President, addressing growing criticism of its relevance.

Speaking after the 31-member Council was sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama on February 18, Adjaho said the new council would prove that it still plays a vital role in Ghana’s governance. His remarks come at a time when calls to abolish the institution have gained momentum, with some questioning its value.

In his address to the newly sworn-in members, President Mahama acknowledged the skepticism surrounding the Council of State, which has faced public scrutiny over its perceived lack of impact. Some have even suggested that the body is merely a “rubber-stamp” for executive decisions. However, the President expressed his confidence that the new Council, under Adjaho’s leadership, could change this narrative.

“I believe your tenure will convince those who doubt your relevance and put to rest any such perceptions,” Mahama said, emphasizing his belief in the council’s potential to help guide the country.

In his response, Mr. Adjaho assured the President and the public that this new council would be different. “While it’s true that many have questioned the relevance of the Council of State, we are committed to showing that we can make a real difference,” he declared.

The former Speaker of Parliament emphasized the unity of the new Council, pledging that the members would work together as a team to support the President and contribute meaningfully to the governance process. He also pointed to the inclusion of younger voices in the Council, with three members under the age of 32, signaling a shift toward greater diversity and fresh perspectives.

“We are aware of the challenges facing our country, and we will be there for you, Mr. President, day and night,” Adjaho continued. “We will give you the advice and support needed to navigate these difficult times. The 11 members you’ve appointed will not fail you. Ghana will succeed.”

With a renewed sense of commitment and a determination to prove their critics wrong, the new Council of State appears ready to take on the responsibility of advising the President and ensuring the body’s continued relevance in the country’s political landscape.
