The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over the changing stance of Energy Minister-designate John Jinapor regarding the involvement of the private sector in the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In September 2024, Jinapor criticized private sector participation in ECG, arguing that it was harmful and called for a reduction in political interference. However, by January 2025, his position appeared to shift, with Jinapor advocating for private sector involvement in metering and revenue collection.

The abrupt change in position has drawn scrutiny from the Minority, with some questioning whether this shift could open the door to the involvement of informal actors, referred to locally as “goro boys,” in ECG operations.

Speaking to journalists in Accra, the Minority stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in the energy sector. They called on the public to carefully assess Jinapor’s responses during his vetting process.

“The nominee’s position has shifted significantly, from criticizing private sector involvement to supporting it. Does this mean he plans to introduce ‘goro boys’ into ECG activities? We urge the public to reflect on the potential implications,” the Minority stated.

The Minority added that the role of the Energy Minister is critical for the country’s future and emphasized the need for consistent, transparent leadership in managing Ghana’s energy sector.
