The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to commit fully to addressing the needs of their constituents and the nation.
Speaking at an orientation session for first-time MPs, Bagbin emphasised that lawmakers must respect the trust placed in them by their communities, many of whom have made significant sacrifices to support their political campaigns.
“You are role models,” Bagbin told the MPs. “The lives of many people depend on you. Don’t fail them. Remember how your constituents fought for you, not only during elections but even now, defending you with their lives. It is not fair to take their trust lightly or jeopardise their future.”
The Speaker warned that neglecting their duties would have consequences, adding that MPs’ actions would be judged by both their communities and by God. He stressed that serving the people was not just an obligation to others, but a responsibility to secure one’s own future.
