Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Education Minister and current Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, on Wednesday declared his intention to seek the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential nomination ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.

In a post published to his official Facebook account, Dr. Adutwum signaled his readiness to enter the race once the party formally opens nominations. “With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I…declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party,” he wrote.

Dr. Adutwum, who earned public recognition for spearheading education sector reforms during his ministerial tenure, becomes the latest figure to express interest in the party’s top ticket. His entry adds further complexity to what is shaping up to be a competitive field.

The announcement comes amid growing speculation over the NPP’s post-2024 direction. Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the party into the 2024 elections, remains a prominent figure. Other potential contenders includes Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and  Bryan Acheampong—both seen as possible challengers within the party’s emerging power blocs.

The NPP confirmed earlier this month that it will hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, a date set by the party’s National Council following recommendations from its constitutional review committee. That timeline now begins to sharpen the outlines of what may become a crowded and closely watched race.

Dr. Adutwum’s candidacy is expected to draw attention from party reformists and education-focused constituencies, though his ability to consolidate broader support remains to be tested in the months ahead.
