Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu appointed Ag. Gov’t Statistician

President John Mahama has appointed Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu as Acting Government Statistician, pending further consultations with the country’s Council of State. The announcement was made Friday in an official statement from the presidency.

Dr. Iddrisu, an economist with extensive experience in public sector leadership, assumes the role after serving as Director of the Economic Strategy and Research Division at the Ministry of Finance. His work has significantly contributed to the shaping of Ghana’s macroeconomic policies, particularly in the areas of economic forecasting and policy research. As Acting Government Statistician, he will oversee national efforts to assess Ghana’s real and external sectors, providing critical data to inform government decisions.

Over his decade-long career in key governmental roles, Dr. Iddrisu has held several notable positions:

  • Director, Economic Research and Forecasting Division (2013-2019): Led macroeconomic modelling and long-term economic projections for the country.
  • Acting Director, Real Sector Division (2010-2013): Directed research into sectoral growth and productivity trends across Ghana’s economy.

Dr. Iddrisu has also been a member of various governing boards and technical committees, representing the Ministry of Finance and influencing key policy decisions. He holds a PhD in International Development Studies from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo and has earned degrees from prestigious institutions, including the London School of Economics and the University of Ghana.

Additionally, Dr. Iddrisu has worked with international organizations such as Oxfam GB and the World Bank, further cementing his standing as a respected expert in economic policy.

The provisional appointment will be finalized following consultations with the Council of State. Upon confirmation, Dr. Iddrisu will lead the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), where he is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing evidence-based policymaking to guide national development.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s Spokesperson, praised Dr. Iddrisu’s extensive track record, emphasizing that his leadership will strengthen Ghana’s statistical infrastructure and support more informed governance.
