Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams has called on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that justice prevails in his administration by rewarding good deeds and holding wrongdoers accountable.
Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Sunday, January 12, 2025, Duncan Williams emphasised the importance of justice and accountability in governance. “Justice means rewarding people for the good done and punishing people for the wrong done,” he said, urging the president to uphold these principles for the greater good of the nation.
The service, which was organised to thank God for the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections, also saw Duncan Williams reflecting on the potential for Ghana under Mahama’s leadership. “I look forward to a Ghana under President Mahama where the atmosphere is conducive for prosperity, where Ghanaians will not queue for visas to leave the country,” he stated.
He also advised government officials and appointees to maintain a focus on the people they serve, cautioning them against transactional relationships. “Don’t forget the people who voted for you,” he urged, praising Mahama and his wife for their commitment to the nation.
In a related development, Rt. Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. Divine Agbeko, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG), also spoke out against what he termed “naughty taxes” introduced by the previous government. Speaking at an induction service in Ho, Agbeko criticised taxes he felt had unduly burdened Ghanaians, particularly those that taxed money already subject to other levies. He urged the new administration to remove these taxes and introduce more beneficial policies. “Take those naughty taxes away and do something better,” he said.
