The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has outlined the process for registering vehicles with 2025 number plates, set to begin on January 2, 2025. The registration will be carried out at all DVLA operational centres across the country.

In a statement issued on December 20, the DVLA confirmed that the introduction of an online vehicle registration system will streamline the process. Vehicle owners will receive a smart card and certificate of title, detailing the vehicle’s information upon successful registration.

The 2025 number plates will carry a -25 suffix, indicating the year of registration, and will be issued once owners complete the necessary procedures in line with the Road Traffic Regulation, 2012 (LI 2180).

Two-Phase Registration Process

The registration process will unfold in two phases. In the first phase, vehicles must be taken to an accredited testing centre with customs entry documents for verification. Once validated, the documents will be submitted at a DVLA office for clearance, after which an invoice for the requested services will be generated. This stage can be initiated starting January 2, 2025.

The second phase will involve payment for the registration services, which can be made either in cash or electronically at the preferred registration centre. Following this, biometric details of the vehicle owner will be collected, and documents such as the roadworthy certificate, number plates, and the vehicle registration smart card will be issued, confirming the completion of the registration process.

The DVLA’s move aims to modernise and simplify vehicle registration, ensuring a more efficient and secure system for vehicle owners.
