Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Ghana’s Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, has stressed the urgent need for improved infrastructure in the country’s hospitality sector to attract more visitors and boost national revenue.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 22, Gomashie acknowledged concerns raised by industry stakeholders about the declining state of the hospitality sector, which has prompted many Ghanaians to seek tourism experiences abroad. She pointed out that the country’s current infrastructure is insufficient to meet the growing demand, both domestically and internationally.
“This is an ongoing issue, particularly when it comes to hotel rates,” Gomashie said. “Even international hotel franchises in Ghana tend to be significantly higher than in other countries. The lack of infrastructure is a challenge that is very apparent.”
Gomashie committed to working closely with the private sector to address these infrastructure gaps and increase the sector’s capacity to meet the rising demand for tourism. She also emphasized the importance of collaborating with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Finance, to secure the necessary support for these improvements.
“If I’m given the nod, this is an issue that must be dealt with,” Gomashie said. “The lack of proper facilities is a missed opportunity for revenue generation for our country.”
