The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, in collaboration with the police and the Eastern Regional Elections Security Taskforce, oversaw the destruction of defective ballot papers on Tuesday, December 3. The defective ballots had been recalled by the EC ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The destruction process took place under the close supervision of representatives from all political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Convention People’s Party (CPP). Constituency election directors monitored the operation from their respective armories to the regional disposal site on the Akwadum road.

The EC had previously suspended the Special Voting exercise in the Eastern and Western regions due to irregularities with the ballots. Except for the Afram Plains North and South constituencies, defective ballots from the remaining 31 constituencies were incinerated.

John Appiah Baffour, Eastern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, expressed satisfaction with the exercise. Speaking to Citi News, he said, “The exercise has been very successful. All political parties and constituency executives, including those from NPP, NDC, and CPP, were present. They checked the seals on the ballot bags, confirming everything was intact before we proceeded with the destruction.”
