The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has increased the number of media accreditations for the upcoming general election, announcing a total of 4,500 passes for journalists covering the collation of results at constituency and regional centres.
Initially, the EC had proposed a minimum of 3,308 accreditations. However, during a press briefing on Friday, November 29, Chairperson Jean Mensa confirmed the expansion, stating that the new accreditation cards would be issued to the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) by Sunday evening.
The GJA and GIBA will be responsible for the distribution of the passes, with the EC clarifying that it will not be involved in the allocation process.
Madam Mensa emphasised the Commission’s reliance on the media to ensure transparency during the election, affirming that the EC was committed to working closely with journalists before, during, and after the December vote.
The EC also explained that an earlier memo, which outlined restrictions on the number of TV and radio stations allowed at each collation centre, was intended to guarantee minimum media coverage, not to limit access. With the increased number of accreditations, the EC has acknowledged the need for more media presence despite space constraints at many of the centres.
