Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has rejected claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that it was the party’s intervention that led to the discovery of errors in the ballot papers for the Ahafo and Volta regions.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, Deputy Chairman of the EC, Dr Bossman Asare, clarified that the anomalies were detected by the Commission’s internal auditors during routine checks, not by the opposition party.
“Our internal auditors, along with security personnel, identified the issues during their rounds,” he said. “The Electoral Commission acted on feedback from our team on the ground. We didn’t receive any formal or informal complaints from the NDC.”
The NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, had earlier asserted that the anomalies would have gone unnoticed had the party not raised the alarm.
However, Dr Bossman dismissed the claim, stating: “If Dr Tanko believes the NDC alerted us before we acted, there is no evidence to support that. The EC took action after the printing house failed to meet expectations regarding serial numbers, prompting us to reassign the Volta Region to two of our trusted printers.”
He added that reprinting efforts are already underway to ensure the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the polls.
This development comes as Ghana prepares for its upcoming elections, with the EC under pressure to deliver a credible process.
