Electoral Commission said it will rerun the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency after a dispute over the legitimacy of results from last December’s general elections.
The announcement, made in a press release Tuesday and signed by Deputy Chairman of Operations Samuel Tettey, follows a closed-door meeting held July 1 with representatives of the country’s two main political parties—the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
At issue is the use of scanned “Pink Sheets”—official forms used to tabulate polling station-level results—in the initial vote tally. The NDC alleged that 37 scanned forms, submitted by the NPP after original physical copies were reportedly destroyed in a disturbance at the collation center, lacked adequate verification. The party demanded a complete rerun across those polling stations.
The NPP countered that the scanned results had already been validated by party agents and insisted that only three outstanding polling station results were needed to finalize the outcome.
The Electoral Commission acknowledged that the destruction of original Pink Sheets forced officials to rely on scanned versions. It ruled that 19 of the 37 scanned forms had not been verified by presiding officers, despite having party agent approval—rendering them ineligible under electoral rules.
“Following extensive deliberations, the Commission has resolved to rerun the election in 19 of the polling stations,” the EC said, adding that the remaining 18 results had full verification and would stand.
The rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025. The EC pledged to uphold transparency and integrity in the process and called on the Ghana Police Service to ensure a secure and orderly election.
