The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to withdraw their supporters from constituency collation centres across the country.
The plea was made by the EC’s Deputy Chairperson for Operations, Samuel Tettey, during a press conference in the early hours of 8 December.
Reports from 3news correspondents indicate that large crowds of supporters from both parties have gathered at the collation centres, disrupting the counting process. Mr Tettey explained that the presence of the supporters was hindering the smooth progress of the collation, as the results from the polling stations had already been recorded on the pink sheets.
“The results are already documented at the polling stations, so there is no need for supporters to be present,” Mr Tettey said, urging the parties to immediately withdraw their supporters.
He also issued a stern warning that any results produced under such conditions would not be accepted by the EC.
The Deputy Chairperson called on the police to intervene and help clear the centres of the crowds.
“The Police must step in,” he added.
