Ecobank Ghana has fulfilled its three-year commitment to donate 300 laptops to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in support of the Vice-Chancellor’s “Support One Needy Student with One Laptop” (SONSOL) initiative.

The bank handed over the final batch of 100 HP laptops last week, marking the completion of the pledge made in 2021 to equip underprivileged students at the university with essential technology.

Speaking at the ceremony in KNUST’s Council Chamber, Michael Owusu-Acheaw, representing Ecobank’s Managing Director Abena Osei-Poku, emphasised the bank’s focus on education as a key area of its corporate social responsibility. He noted the importance of ensuring students have access to laptops, calling it “no longer acceptable” for students to lack such vital learning tools.

“We started this journey with the goal of supporting your initiative to provide laptops to less privileged students and help enhance their learning and research opportunities,” Owusu-Acheaw said. “This is an investment in Ghana’s younger generation who, due to financial constraints, cannot afford these essential gadgets.”

Ecobank has also made a similar commitment to the University of Ghana, where it is donating 300 laptops as part of the university’s “1 Student 1 Laptop” (1S1L) programme.

In her remarks, KNUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Rita Akosua Dickson expressed gratitude to Ecobank for its ongoing support. She highlighted the success of the SONSOL initiative, which has already provided over 2,300 laptops to students worth approximately GHS23 million.

“This initiative ensures that every brilliant but underprivileged student has access to essential learning tools, helping us nurture transformative leaders,” Professor Dickson said. She assured Ecobank that the laptops would be distributed to deserving students, furthering the university’s mission to provide equitable education.

The ceremony was attended by key KNUST officials, including Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor David Asamoah and Professor John Jerry Kponyo, Dean of Quality Assurance. Ecobank’s delegation included Alex Kofi Oppong, KNUST Branch Manager, and Relationship Managers Joseph Adjei and Shirley Osei Amankwah Agyei.
