The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals responsible for the violent disruptions at its offices during the collation of results for the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, January 17, 2025.

In a statement, the EC condemned the actions, which included threats to staff, destruction of property, and the presence of armed men in military uniform. The violence broke out as the EC sought to resume the collation process, mandated by a High Court order.

Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Chairman in Charge of Operations, noted that while the Ghana Police Service had alerted the Commission to potential security threats, no sufficient protection was provided at the collation centers. This failure allowed a group of supporters, allegedly led by the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to storm the Commission’s offices, causing significant property damage and forcing staff to flee.

The EC stated that video evidence of the attackers is available and has urged the Ghana Police Service to act quickly to identify, arrest, and prosecute those involved. The Commission also called on the government to ensure that proper security measures are in place, allowing the EC to continue its work without further disruption.

Despite the disturbances, the EC reaffirmed its commitment to declaring a winner for Ablekuma North, stressing that a secure environment is critical for the integrity of the electoral process.
