Electricity tariffs will increase by 2.45% for all consumer categories starting 1 July 2025, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced.
The adjustment comes as part of the Commission’s routine quarterly review mechanism, which considers key economic indicators including inflation, the exchange rate, fuel costs, and the generation mix between hydro and thermal power.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the PURC said the review was necessary to ensure the financial sustainability of utility providers.
“For electricity, the Commission has approved a 2.45% upward adjustment,” the statement noted. However, water tariffs will remain unchanged for the third quarter of the year.
Key Factors Behind the Tariff Adjustment
The PURC outlined several variables that influenced the new electricity rates:
- Exchange rate: GHS10.3052 to the US dollar
- Inflation: 20.67% projected annual average
- Natural gas price: USD7.7134 per MMBtu
- Electricity generation mix: 28.8% hydro and 71.2% thermal
- Outstanding utility revenue: GHS488 million carried over from previous quarters
The Commission said these indicators significantly affect the cost of delivering utility services and must be reviewed regularly.
New Electricity Tariff Details
Here is a breakdown of the new electricity tariffs:
- Lifeline customers (0–30 kWh): From 77.63 to 79.53 GHp/kWh
- Residential (301+ kWh): From 232.39 to 238.09 GHp/kWh
- Non-residential (301+ kWh): From 197.33 to 202.17 GHp/kWh
- High Voltage Mines: From 495.93 to 508.09 GHp/kWh
Service charges across all categories remain unchanged.
Water Tariffs Unchanged
The PURC confirmed that water tariffs for all user groups — including residential, non-residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional customers — will remain the same.
The Commission said the decision was aimed at easing the burden on consumers while ensuring that water service providers maintain quality standards.
Focus on Transparency and Value
The PURC reiterated its commitment to balancing the needs of consumers with the sustainability of utility providers.
“We thank stakeholders for their continued support and assure the public of our resolve to ensure value for money and improved service delivery,” the Commission said.
