Ministry of Energy and Green Transition on Wednesday rejected reports circulating in local media that the country is poised for a nationwide blackout on Sunday, July 13. Officials characterized the claims as inaccurate and misleading, stressing that any interruptions in electricity supply will be localized and temporary.
The rumors appear to have stemmed from remarks by Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, who earlier this week announced that Italian energy company ENI would be undertaking scheduled maintenance on its gas infrastructure this Sunday. The work, aimed at increasing gas production capacity, may cause intermittent disruptions to power in certain areas.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, Richmond Rockson, spokesperson and head of communications for the Energy Ministry, pushed back strongly against the reports of a nationwide outage.
“There’s been some misreporting suggesting a nationwide blackout—that is not what the Minister said,” Rockson noted. “That is inaccurate; that is falsehood.”
Mr. Rockson emphasized that while temporary disruptions are possible due to ENI’s maintenance operations, the Ministry has taken steps to prevent any recurrence of widespread rolling blackouts, known locally as “dumsor.”
“The Ministry has put in place measures to ensure we don’t experience any nationwide dumsor or any form of prolonged outages, contrary to what is being speculated,” he said.
