The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling illegal mining, warning that no one, regardless of their political affiliation, will be exempt from prosecution if found guilty of environmental violations.
Prof. Nana Ama Klutse, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, made the statement during an interview on Channel One Newsroom on April 1. She emphasized the agency’s dedication to safeguarding the environment and ensuring compliance with regulations.
“We will focus on our mandate to protect the environment and coordinate all activities that affect it. It doesn’t matter who is involved, whether legally or illegally. Our priority remains the environment,” Prof. Klutse said.
While the EPA actively monitors environmental activities, it also responds to complaints from communities and companies. Prof. Klutse assured the public that any reports of illegal mining would be investigated and offenders held accountable.
“So far, we have not received any complaints about politicians being involved in illegal mining,” she noted. “However, if we receive reports from communities or companies, we will take the necessary action, including prosecution for those found in violation of regulations.”
The Acting CEO also made it clear that politicians would not be shielded from the law. “If any politician is involved in illegal mining, we will apply the law as we would to any other individual,” she stated.
The EPA’s statement comes amid growing concerns over the environmental damage caused by illegal mining, or “galamsey,” which has led to deforestation, water pollution, and land degradation in the country.
