Ghana’s former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab, is under investigation for allegedly acquiring luxury properties using misappropriated public funds.

The  Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, made the announcement on Wednesday during a press briefing in Accra, as part of the Government Accountability Series led by the Presidency’s Communications Directorate.

According to Dr Ayine, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has identified multiple high-value properties and financial transactions linked to Mr Abdul-Wahab, which are believed to have been funded with stolen money during his tenure at NAFCO.

Mr Abdul-Wahab was arrested on 25 June 2025 along with his wife. He was held in custody for two weeks before being granted bail of GHS 60 million (approximately $4.9 million), with two sureties. His wife was released earlier on a separate bail of GHS 30 million.

The Attorney General said the properties traced so far include:

  • A five-bedroom home in Chain Homes, East Legon, valued at $1.625 million
  • A three-bedroom house in Cantonments, purchased for $600,000
  • Several plots of land at Airport Development Area, estimated at $750,000
  • A 17-bedroom boutique hotel in Gumani, Tamale, acquired for $250,000
  • A four-bedroom bungalow in Dworwulu, valued at over GHS 4.14 million
  • A 0.32-acre parcel of government land bought for GHS 307,200

Dr Ayine stressed that the government remains committed to ensuring accountability. “Any assets proven to have been acquired with proceeds of crime will be confiscated in accordance with the law,” he said.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the bail terms, describing them as excessively harsh and politically driven. However, authorities maintain that the investigation is being conducted independently and fairly.

Mr Abdul-Wahab has not publicly responded to the allegations, and formal charges have yet to be filed.

NAFCO, which manages Ghana’s national food buffer stock to stabilise food prices and ensure food security, has not commented on the case.
