Expired Rice Scandal: People should be in jail by now—Ablakwa

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has called for swift action following allegations that expired rice was repackaged and distributed to senior high schools across the country.

Speaking on TV3’s Midday News, Mr Ablakwa expressed astonishment at the Ministry of Education’s apparent lack of awareness of the situation. He alleged that the rice, deemed unfit for consumption, was distributed despite earlier interception by the Ashanti Regional Police and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).

According to the MP, the rice was released for distribution even before the FDA’s laboratory results confirming contamination reached Accra on 6 February.

“I’m surprised they are feigning ignorance of the matter. These are contaminated rice [products] not even fit for animals, yet they have been consumed by our children in schools like Presec, Achimota, Labone, and others,” Mr Ablakwa stated.

He further insisted that those responsible for the incident must face legal consequences.

“This is a serious matter. Heads must roll. People should lose their jobs and be in jail by now,” he added.

The Ministry of Education has launched a probe into the allegations. Meanwhile, stakeholders, including parents and education advocates, are calling for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.
