A fire tore through Maaha Beach Resort on the evening of May 28, destroying 18 rooms and damaging significant portions of the property, local fire officials confirmed Thursday.
The blaze, which ignited around 7 p.m. at the nearby Vision Beach Resort, rapidly spread to the adjacent Maaha facility before being brought under control by firefighters by approximately 10 p.m. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
According to District Fire Commander Mark Hamilton, a total of 33 rooms across the two resorts were affected—18 at Maaha and 15 at Vision Beach Resort.
“All affected rooms were unoccupied at the time of the incident. There were no casualties, and operations at Maaha Beach Resort have resumed,” said Commander Hamilton in an interview with Citi News.
Initial reports from eyewitnesses had questioned the response of a Ghana Gas fire tender, claiming it was unable to assist due to chemical compatibility issues. Hamilton refuted those accounts, stating that the Ghana Gas team was the first to respond, arriving at the scene within five minutes of the distress call.
“The first call came in at 7:59 p.m. We were on-site by 8:04 p.m. The Ghana Gas tender was fully operational, and we deployed a second unit shortly after to support the effort,” he said.
Authorities plan to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the adequacy of fire safety systems at both resorts.
