Alhaji Amadu Sulley, former Deputy Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, has passed away suddenly at the age of 65. His family confirmed that he died on the afternoon of March 1, 2025. Following Islamic tradition, his burial rites were carried out immediately, and he will be laid to rest at the Madina Muslim Cemetery on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 10:00am.

A statement from the family invited Muslim brothers and sisters, as well as friends and loved ones, to join the burial proceedings at his residence and the cemetery. The statement also noted that Alhaji Sulley passed away while observing the first day of Ramadan. “To Allah be the glory. May Allah forgive him and grant all our departed souls Jannat Firdaus,” the statement said.

Alhaji Sulley was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission in 2012 by then-President John Evans Atta-Mills. He had previously served as Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the Commission. His promotion marked the first time a career electoral official was appointed to such a high-ranking position.

He held the role of Deputy Chairman in charge of operations until his dismissal in June 2018, following allegations of illegal vote transfers during the 2016 general elections.

Alhaji Sulley’s educational background includes attending the Ghana National School (now Richard Akwei Memorial School) in Accra, followed by Accra Academy and Opoku Ware School. He completed his university studies at the University of Ghana, where he earned a Diploma in Statistics in 1985. Sulley later obtained Post Graduate Certificates in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration in 1993 and 1995. His project work focused on the Ghanaian electoral system.
