Ghana’s former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has died at the age of 77.
Family sources say she passed away in the early hours of Thursday, 23 October, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. There has not yet been an official statement from the Rawlings family or the government.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was the wife of the late former president Jerry John Rawlings and a major figure in Ghana’s political and social life.
Known for her outspoken views and advocacy for women’s rights, she was instrumental in promoting gender equality and social development. After leaving the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), she went on to form her own political party, the National Democratic Party (NDP).
In recent weeks, Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings made several public appearances. She was among dignitaries who laid wreaths at the Jubilee House to honour eight public servants killed in a helicopter crash. She also attended the Dote Yie funeral rites for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, where she was accompanied by two of her children, Amina and Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings.
