Richard Ahiagbah, Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to honour his pledge and sign the Anti-Gay Bill into law. Ahiagbah’s comments follow Mahama’s recent suggestion that the bill, originally introduced by a private member, would have been more effective if it had been government-sponsored.

During a meeting with Catholic bishops on January 14, Mahama emphasized the need for broader consultations and national consensus if the bill were to be introduced by the government. However, in a Facebook post on January 16, Ahiagbah accused Mahama of backtracking on his commitment to sign the bill, which was a key promise during his 2024 election campaign.

Ahiagbah called on Mahama to sign the bill as it currently stands, warning that elections have consequences and urging the President not to shift his position. The bill, if passed, would impose prison sentences for individuals involved in promoting or engaging in LGBTQ+ activities.
