A gas explosion at the University of Ghana’s Bush Canteen in Legon, Accra, triggered a fire on Wednesday evening that caused significant property damage, running into thousands of cedis. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

According to sources, the explosion rapidly ignited surrounding areas, sending thick smoke billowing into the sky. Videos circulating on social media captured the intense flames, as students and vendors quickly fled to safety.

The fire, which broke out around 9:00 p.m., was swiftly contained by fire services within an hour, according to DOI Alex King Nartey. “Due to the volatile nature of the substances involved, we had to request additional fire tenders from Madina and Abelemkpe,” Nartey said. “The fire is 90% under control, and we are now focused on preventing further spread.”

Damaged property included approximately 20 fridges, freezers, and spare parts, all of which were destroyed in the blaze.

This latest incident adds to growing concerns over fire safety in Ghana, following similar fires earlier this year at the Agbogbloshie Market and Kumasi Magazine, among other smaller outbreaks.
