Road construction projects across Ghana are expected to experience major delays as workers from the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) begin an indefinite strike starting Tuesday, November 12. The decision follows the government’s move to press ahead with the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118), despite workers’ calls for its suspension.
At the center of the dispute is a demand for the removal of two senior officials: Ing. I.K. Mensah, Chairman of the GHA Board, and Ing. Collins B. Donkor, Chief Executive Officer of the newly formed National Roads Authority. GHA workers accuse these officials of supporting policies that they say jeopardize the future of Ghana’s road infrastructure sector.
The strike comes after a formal petition to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in which GHA workers urged for broader consultations before implementing the new Act. They argue that the restructuring could have adverse effects on the sector, calling for more transparency and inclusiveness in decision-making.
The strike threatens to halt progress on key road infrastructure projects across the country, adding to mounting concerns over Ghana’s infrastructure development.
