The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has reclaimed over 16 acres of land near Kotoka International Airport from the McDan Group of Companies, following a ruling by an Accra High Court in its favour.
The court’s decision, handed down on 6 May 2025, granted GACL full re-entry and possession of the lands, which had been occupied since 2012 by subsidiaries of the McDan Group—namely McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited.
The disputed parcels, measuring approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres, are located adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International, close to the airport. GACL initiated legal action in February this year, citing breaches of lease agreements and the non-payment of ground rent.
The company sought to recover outstanding rent totalling $26,296 and secured a perpetual injunction to prevent further interference with the property. It subsequently applied for a summary judgment, arguing that the defendants had no valid legal defence.
The court ruled in favour of GACL, granting all the reliefs sought and awarding GH¢50,000 in legal costs.
This ruling comes months after McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were suspended in December 2024 over separate debt issues. While those debts were later settled, the land dispute had remained unresolved until the court’s intervention.
GACL has described the ruling as a major asset recovery success. A spokesperson said: “The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets but also reinforces our commitment to accountability and lawful management of public property.”
The legal victory is being credited to GACL’s Legal Department and Managing Director, Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, who led the asset recovery effort.
GACL is expected to explore new uses for the reclaimed land, including potential aviation-related developments or strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing airport infrastructure and boosting revenue.
