Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has ordered the immediate reopening of four key courts in Ghana’s Upper East Region, following their closure amid ongoing security concerns.

The courts affected include the High Court in Bolgatanga, Circuit Court in Bolgatanga, District Court in Bolgatanga, and District Court in Bongo.

This decision reverses an earlier directive that saw seven courts in Bawku and surrounding communities shut down. The closures were implemented due to a recent surge in violent clashes in the Bawku township, which led to multiple fatalities. The measure was intended to ensure the safety of judicial staff, judges, lawyers, and the public.

In a statement released on Friday, 8 November, the Judicial Secretary confirmed the reopening and instructed registrars of the respective courts to resume operations immediately. However, the Chief Justice stressed that some courts will remain closed until further notice, depending on security assessments.

The resumption of operations at these four courts is seen as a step towards restoring judicial services in the region amid ongoing security challenges.
