The Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement-Africa (PTAAM-Africa) has formally petitioned Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama to remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs. Jean Mensa, and her deputies.
Filed under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, the petition outlines allegations of financial mismanagement, constitutional violations, and misconduct, which PTAAM-Africa claims have compromised the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.
The group particularly criticises the procurement of new biometric voter devices and the compilation of a new voter register ahead of the 2020 general elections. PTAAM-Africa argues that these actions led to unnecessary financial losses and diverted resources that could have been used for more pressing national needs.
The petition also points to the handling of the 2020 elections, accusing the EC of disregarding health and safety concerns by proceeding with voter registration during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it highlights inconsistencies in presidential election results and alleged political bias in EC appointments.
PTAAM-Africa is urging swift action, asserting that the removal of Mrs. Jean Mensa and her deputies is crucial to restoring public trust and ensuring the integrity of future elections.
