Ghana is facing a potential energy crisis, with only a limited fuel supply available for power generation, according to John Abdulai Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu. Jinapor has warned that the country may soon experience power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” due to a critical shortage of fuel.
Speaking to JoyNews after the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama in Accra on January 7, 2025, Jinapor criticised the outgoing government of President Nana Akufo-Addo for failing to make necessary fuel procurements despite ongoing warnings.
“I have bad news for you. As of today, the confirmation we are receiving is that we have only five hours’ worth of fuel left,” Jinapor stated. He further warned that the available fuel, including heavy fuel oil and diesel, would not last more than two days. “In two days’ time, we are likely to run out of fuel,” he added.
Jinapor noted that the administration has not placed any new fuel orders, leaving the country vulnerable to an energy shortage. His remarks come amid concerns over the country’s ability to maintain a stable power supply in the coming days.
