Created by Ghanaians for Ghanaians, GMX aims to centralise the country’s vibrant musical heritage, featuring everything from highlife and hiplife to afrobeat and traditional rhythms.
The launch event, held on Wednesday, 30 October 2024, at the De Iconic Events Centre in East Legon, saw a gathering of influential figures from Ghana’s entertainment and political spheres. Among the attendees were Vice President and New Patriotic Party flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who served as the special guest of honour. Other prominent guests included Minister for Tourism, Creative Arts, and Culture Mr Andrew Egyapa Mercer; President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) Bessa Simons; and CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority Mr Akwesi Agyeman.
Dr Bawumia, in his address, described the launch as a “historic moment for Ghana,” emphasising the importance of a locally developed platform to showcase the nation’s music. “It is my distinct honour and pleasure to formally launch GMX, Ghana’s locally made streaming app,” he said.
The event also drew celebrated musicians and industry figures, including rapper E.L., producer Zapp Mallet, artist Samini, and record producer Kaywa. Traditional music icon King Ayisoba delivered a standout performance, adding to the evening’s celebration of Ghanaian music.
