The Ghana Police Service has dismissed viral social media rumors that suggest Elrad Salifu Amoako, the 16-year-old accused driver in a recent fatal East Legon accident, is not being held in custody.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the police confirmed that Amoako, who was ordered by a court on 1 November to be detained at the Osu Correctional Centre, remains there as of this morning.
The statement addresses the rumors, labeling them as “false claims” and reminding the public that circulating misinformation violates Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). Police emphasized that the incident, which led to the tragic deaths of two individuals, should not be used to spread misinformation or for personal publicity.
Police investigators have identified two social media accounts, one TikTok handle “prisywanlov1” and a Facebook account “EmpressPapa A-Amigos,” as sources of the rumors. They are reportedly working to track down those behind the accounts to hold them accountable.
“It is deeply unfortunate that this tragedy, marked by the loss of two young lives, is being manipulated in an unGhanaian way to attract attention,” the police said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
