John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate, has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s government for allegedly downplaying the current power crisis and shifting responsibility to a future NDC administration, should his party win in the upcoming December elections.
Speaking to supporters in Ehiamankyene in the Krachi West District of the Oti Region, Mr. Mahama accused the government of concealing the full scale of the power issues by avoiding an official load-shedding schedule. According to him, the recent disruption in electricity supply is linked to the withdrawal of Sunon Asogli Power Plant, which has ceased operations due to significant unpaid debt.
“We do not have a stable plant because Sunon Asogli has shut down its operations over substantial unpaid debt by the government,” Mr. Mahama stated. “Dumsor has returned, but the government is reluctant to admit this and refuses to introduce a load-shedding timetable, fearing blame.”
He further alleged that the government intends to pass on a $2 billion debt in the energy sector to the next administration, which he warned would place severe constraints on any future government’s ability to resolve the crisis.
In his remarks, Mr. Mahama also outlined ambitious electoral targets, forecasting a significant victory in Greater Accra by a margin of 300,000 votes and emphasizing the need to increase support in the Volta and Oti regions.
“We want to boost our votes in the Volta and Oti regions, which will strengthen our lead in Greater Accra. Last time, we won in Greater Accra, but this time, we need a lead of around 300,000 votes,” he asserted. Mr. Mahama suggested that reducing the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) votes in the Volta region could be crucial to the NDC’s path to victory in December.
The issue of “dumsor,” or frequent power outages, has become a politically sensitive topic in Ghana, with concerns mounting over its impact on both daily life and the economy.
