Ghana has introduced a fast-track visa policy aimed at bolstering tourism and foreign investment by significantly reducing processing times for travel documents.
The new directive, which took effect immediately, trims the visa approval timeline to a maximum of five working days—down from the previous four to six weeks—according to an announcement by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
“We have put in place adequate measures at our diplomatic missions to drastically cut down the visa processing time,” the ministry said in a statement posted to social media.
The policy forms part of the government’s broader initiative to position Ghana as a competitive destination for global investors and tourists, in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s inaugural message on January 7, 2025, declaring that “Ghana is open for business.”
Ghana’s foreign ministry said infrastructure has already been upgraded at its diplomatic missions worldwide to ensure the policy’s immediate implementation. Officials said the change is designed to eliminate longstanding bureaucratic delays that have historically discouraged international engagement.
“As Foreign Minister, I am committed to positioning Ghana as the preferred destination for investors and tourists by making the country more competitive and eliminating red tape,” Mr. Ablakwa said.
The ministry clarified that the five-day timeline refers to a decision being made on a visa application—not a guarantee of approval. Eligibility will still be assessed under existing entry requirements.
Analysts say the move could provide a short-term boost to Ghana’s tourism and services sectors while also signaling to international investors a renewed commitment to improving the ease of doing business.
“Ghana is truly open for business. Come enjoy the Black Star experience,” Mr. Ablakwa said.
