Ghana Trade Fair Limited’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Agnes Adu has announced the construction of a new state-of-the-art convention centre in Accra, comparable to international venues such as the UK’s O2 Arena and the Javits Centre in New York.

In an interview  on Channel One TV, Dr. Adu outlined the ambitious redevelopment project, which will introduce a wide array of facilities. Planned amenities include a hotel, conference hall, exhibition spaces, restaurants, a data centre, and a designated area for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The project aims to create a premier venue for both regional and international events, designed to boost Ghana’s economy and cultural appeal. The facility, according to Dr. Adu, will span around 20,000 square meters, with the main exhibition hall covering 10,000 square meters.

“The exhibition hall and convention centre floor measure 10,000 square meters,” she explained. “Based on conservative estimates, if configured for a large concert with standing room, the space could accommodate up to 30,000 people.”

The multifunctional facility will include versatile halls that can be adapted for various events, such as conventions, exhibitions, weddings, and concerts. The design also includes a spacious 5,000-square-meter lobby, equipped with a restaurant, gift shop featuring made-in-Ghana products, and a forex bureau.

In partnership with private developers, additional facilities such as a hotel, a data centre, retail spaces, an amusement centre, and a dedicated AfCFTA secretariat will also be constructed.

Construction began in 2020, with preliminary infrastructure, including roads, power, and drainage systems, already completed. Following a brief hiatus between 2020 and 2022, the team is now focused on building the convention and exhibition centre.
