Ghana will officially launch 5G internet services, marking a new era in the nation’s telecommunications landscape.

The inauguration ceremony will take  place today at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo. The arrival of 5G technology is set to elevate internet speeds, reliability, and connectivity across the country, transforming Ghana’s digital services.

5G, the fifth generation of wireless technology, is known for its dramatically enhanced internet speeds, faster uploads and downloads, and improved connection stability. It operates on the same radio frequencies as previous technologies—3G, 4G, and 4G LTE—but is designed to deliver tenfold improvements in speed, reduced latency, and expanded bandwidth, making it a substantial upgrade from 4G.

Communications and Digitalisation Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has highlighted 5G’s potential to provide faster data services at more affordable rates. She emphasised that the rollout would help Ghanaians access digital services more effectively in critical areas such as healthcare, education, and financial services.

The government has awarded the 5G license to The Next Gen InfraCo (NGIC), a new shared infrastructure provider supported by the government and a coalition of seven telecom industry firms. The consortium, including Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana, is expected to deliver widespread 5G coverage across the country.

The rollout of this next-generation network is part of Ghana’s strategy to improve mobile broadband accessibility nationwide, with the aim of strengthening digital infrastructure and fostering economic growth through advanced connectivity.
