A Ghanaian doctor, Dr. Joyce Emefa Addo-Klah, has been hailed as a hero after saving a passenger during a medical emergency on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Flight KL 589 from Amsterdam to Accra on December 11, 2024.

Approximately four hours into the flight, a passenger fell seriously ill, prompting the cabin crew to call for medical assistance. Dr. Addo-Klah, who was travelling with her husband, an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist, and their son, quickly responded to the call.

She retrieved her medical bag from the overhead compartment and rushed to the passenger’s aid, assessing their condition and stabilising them with an injection from the flight’s emergency medical kit. To maintain privacy and calm the other passengers, the individual was moved to the business class section for further monitoring.

Dr. Addo-Klah’s professionalism and calmness reassured the passengers, who had initially been unsettled by the emergency. Her clear communication with the cabin crew further demonstrated her expertise in managing the situation.

The patient remained stable for the duration of the flight, and the plane landed safely in Accra without further incident. The cabin crew expressed their deep gratitude to Dr. Addo-Klah for her prompt and effective intervention, which likely prevented a more serious outcome.

In recognition of her heroic actions, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines presented Dr. Addo-Klah with an on-board reward and offered her a discounted ticket for future flights.
