Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has demanded an apology from the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, following allegations he is using his influence to prolong the ongoing University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG) strike to benefit the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in upcoming elections.

In a statement issued by his solicitor, K. Keli-Delataa, Prof. Gyampo described the accusations as “baseless and defamatory.” The NPP’s claims, which surfaced on 28 October, allege that Prof. Gyampo is attempting to sway the election by influencing UTAG and affiliated student groups, including the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and the University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG), for personal and political ends.

Keli-Delataa stated that these allegations damage Prof. Gyampo’s reputation as a respected academic and were made without evidence or due diligence. “Our client has tremendous local and international repute as an astute academic,” the solicitor said, asserting that it is “disrespectful” to imply that one person could single-handedly control UTAG’s decisions.

Prof. Gyampo’s legal team has demanded that the NPP retract the accusations and issue an apology within 48 hours, warning that failure to do so could lead to legal action. The NPP is yet to respond.
