Polling stations have opened across Ghana for the 2024 general election, with citizens heading to the polls to choose a new president and elect 276 members of parliament.
The election is shaping up to be one of the most fiercely contested in the country’s history, with 12 candidates vying for the presidency. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, representing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), faces off against former President John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), both of whom have campaigned vigorously ahead of today’s vote.
Alongside the presidential race, Ghanaians will also decide the composition of the next parliament, with 276 seats up for grabs.
Voting began at 7:00 AM, and long queues have already formed at polling stations as citizens eagerly cast their ballots. Election officials are working to ensure a smooth and orderly process, with security forces deployed across the country to maintain peace and order throughout the day.
Authorities have called on voters to engage peacefully, emphasising the importance of adhering to electoral guidelines to safeguard the integrity of the election.
As the voting process unfolds, Ghanaians are hopeful for a peaceful and credible election, continuing the country’s tradition of conducting transparent and free elections.
