The Black Stars, Ghana’s senior men’s football team, have slipped in the FIFA Men’s World Rankings, released on Thursday, moving down three places to 73rd globally. The drop follows a challenging run in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where a draw and defeat to Sudan have contributed to their position.

Ghana, once among Africa’s elite, now ranks 14th on the continent, trailing teams like South Africa (11th), Burkina Faso (12th), and Cabo Verde (13th). This marks a stark contrast to October 2015, when the Black Stars held a global position of 25th. The team has faced persistent inconsistency and multiple managerial changes in recent years, adding to their struggle to regain footing.

Sudan, on the other hand, made notable progress, jumping ten places from 120th to 110th in the world rankings. Comoros also saw improvement, climbing from 118th to 108th following a win and draw against Tunisia in the AFCON qualifiers. Tunisia endured the steepest drop on the continent, falling from 36th to 47th in the global standings and moving from fourth to seventh place in Africa.

Meanwhile, Morocco maintains its dominance as Africa’s top-ranked team, moving up to 13th globally. Senegal and Egypt follow as Africa’s second and third teams, ranking 20th and 30th, respectively.

Ghana’s decline underscores the ongoing challenges the Black Stars face as they aim to reclaim their former status on the international stage.
