President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in the members of Ghana’s newly-formed Constitutional Review Committee, giving them six months to complete their work and deliver their findings by July 2025.
At the swearing-in ceremony held at Jubilee House on January 30, President Mahama stressed the importance of the committee’s mission, declaring, “This is not an exercise in futility… it is about Ghana, not any political party.” He reiterated that the review is crucial for ensuring that the Constitution remains dynamic and responsive to the changing needs of the nation.
The committee, which includes respected legal scholars, political scientists, and civil society leaders, will spend the next six months identifying gaps and challenges in past constitutional reforms. They will also engage with a broad range of stakeholders to develop recommendations aimed at strengthening Ghana’s democratic institutions.
Prof. H Kwasi Prempeh, the committee chair, expressed commitment to the task ahead, saying, “We will approach this with sincerity and seriousness, always keeping the welfare of the people at the forefront.”
The committee’s work is expected to result in key recommendations that will shape Ghana’s future constitutional landscape and potentially lead to significant reforms. President Mahama expressed confidence that the committee would deliver impactful solutions within the prescribed timeframe.
